A neuron is the basic element of neural networks, akin to what a switch is to a digital computer. Acting as in integrator of the many individual electrical impulses arriving at axons attached to the neuron, it will eventually reach a firing potential and pass its own signal on to other neurons. Though the functioning of a neuron is fairly well understood, it is not as yet know how networks of neurons result in intelligence.
